Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra defended the government’s plan to legalize casinos within entertainment complexes. She emphasized that these complexes won’t turn into open gambling houses in Thailand.
“These aren’t just gambling dens. They’re designed as tourist attractions, with casinos being a small part of them,” she explained.
This comes after protests arose against the construction of these entertainment complexes. Many voiced concerns that such projects could lead to a rise in illegal gambling and increase gambling addiction, potentially harming public morals.
While speaking in Si Sa Ket province, her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, backed the ruling Pheu Thai Party and its candidate for local elections. The push for entertainment complexes was a key topic during his campaign.
Paetongtarn believes these complexes will draw tourists and create new income opportunities for Thailand. She pointed out that boosting tourism is essential for economic growth, especially as the country looks for new ways to increase its GDP.
The Prime Minister returned from the 55th World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, just before addressing the media at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
