Goa/Karwar: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali on India’s first home-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant. He praised the remarkable teamwork of the armed forces, which led to Pakistan’s swift surrender during Operation Sindoor.
In his address, PM Modi said, “The fear instilled by the Indian Navy, the skills of the Indian Air Force, and the courage of the Indian Army all played a vital role in this victory.” This coalition of forces has been a crucial factor in India’s military success.
He emphasized that today’s defense readiness reflects this same spirit of unity and strength.
The Vikrant symbolizes “Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” or self-reliant India. PM Modi described it as “a showcase of India’s military capabilities.” He spoke about its significance, stating, “It’s not just a military asset; it’s a testament to our hard work and commitment in the 21st century.”
Continuing his tradition, Modi celebrated Diwali with naval personnel, expressing his joy to be among India’s brave soldiers. He compared the ocean’s golden glow to the Diwali lamps, saying, “This is a memorable scene.”
INS Vikrant is 262 meters long and can displace about 45,000 tonnes. The carrier was developed in phases between 2007 and 2019, with a cost of around ₹20,000 crore. With 76% of its components manufactured in India, it marks a significant step toward self-reliance in defense.
The ship is equipped to carry about 30 aircraft, including enhanced MiG-29K fighter jets and indigenous helicopters, showcasing India’s growing naval capabilities. Its commissioning puts India among a select group of countries able to design and build aircraft carriers.
Modi praised the Navy for its role in securing India’s waters, saying, “INS Vikrant will serve as inspiration for future generations.” Last year, he celebrated Diwali with soldiers at the Indo-Pak border, keeping up a two-decade tradition of spending the festival with the armed forces.
