PM Modi Unveils ₹35,000 Crore Agricultural Initiatives: Empowering Farmers to Explore Global Markets

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced two new agricultural schemes: the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) and a Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses. Together, these initiatives have a budget of ₹35,440 crore. They aim to improve the lives of farmers and enhance India’s agricultural landscape.

During the launch, Modi highlighted the completion of over 1,054 agricultural projects, valued at ₹3,650 crore, funded by the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund. Additionally, he inaugurated several projects in animal husbandry and fisheries, reflecting a significant investment in the agricultural sector.

Modi addressed the importance of self-reliance in agriculture while also emphasizing the need for global competitiveness. He encouraged farmers to not only focus on local needs but also to target crops with potential in international markets.

Citing historical context, Modi criticized previous governments for neglecting agriculture. He stated that since 2014, the current government has made numerous reforms, reversing the previous administration’s approach and showing tangible improvements in agricultural production.

For context, during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) tenure, the fertilizer subsidy was around ₹5 lakh crore over ten years. In contrast, this government has invested more than ₹13 lakh crore in the same sector over the last decade.

Modi also discussed the direct financial support farmers have received through the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, with ₹3.75 lakh crore deposited directly into their bank accounts. This highlights a significant shift in financial support for farmers.

The PMDDKY aims to uplift 100 agricultural districts that currently face challenges like low productivity and limited access to credit. Funding for this program will come from pooling resources from various existing schemes. Meanwhile, the pulses mission is designed to expand the area for pulse cultivation significantly by 2030.

Modi pointed out recent tax reductions, such as the GST on tractors, making farming equipment more affordable. These actions are part of a broader strategy to improve profitability for farmers.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Animal Husbandry Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh praised the government for its initiatives, noting the significant growth in the livestock sector and the goal of making nine states disease-free.
