On May 1, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai. This unique event brought together prominent figures from the film and digital content industries across India. PM Modi emphasized the growing significance of Indian content creators in shaping the nation’s economy and announced plans for the WAVES Awards, highlighting the summit’s ambitious goals.
WAVES 2025 is being celebrated as a groundbreaking event. It features an impressive lineup of 42 plenary discussions, 39 breakout sessions, and 32 masterclasses led by experts. These sessions cover a range of topics, including broadcasting, film, digital media, and the emerging AVGC-XR sector.
PM Modi’s address focused on the future of India, stating, “India will soon become the world’s third-largest economy.” He highlighted India’s leadership in fintech adoption and its position as the second-largest mobile manufacturer. Notably, he mentioned, “India has a billion-plus stories ready to be shared with the world.” He called on the youth to harness their creativity and tell these untold stories.
The Prime Minister described this moment as the dawn of the "orange economy," a term referring to creative industries. He noted that Indian films, food, and music are increasingly making their mark globally. “The youth are free from creative constraints,” he said, praising young creators in gaming, animation, and other formats. WAVES aims to empower this new generation, helping them redefine the entertainment landscape.
Modi also pointed out the rapid growth of the OTT sector in India, which has expanded 10 times in recent years. “The screen may be small, but the growth potential is enormous,” he emphasized. This reflects the changing media consumption patterns, particularly among younger audiences who favor digital content.
In summary, WAVES represents a significant milestone in India’s cultural and creative evolution. It not only showcases the nation’s creative talents but also sets the stage for future growth in the entertainment industry. As digital platforms continue to rise, India is poised to become a pivotal player in the global creative economy.
