PM Modi Unveils Major Rs 4,800-Crore Projects in Tamil Nadu and Strengthens India-UK Trade Pact

Thoothukudi: On a significant day for Thoothukudi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened a new terminal at the local airport, backed by an investment of ₹452 crore. This terminal is a part of broader infrastructure projects worth ₹4,800 crore, covering areas like aviation, railways, highways, ports, and energy. These initiatives are designed to boost Tamil Nadu’s economy and improve its connectivity.

During the inauguration, Modi engaged the audience with a friendly “Vanakkam” in Tamil. He highlighted India’s increasing global confidence, pointing to a recent free trade agreement with the UK as evidence of this growth.

“The India-UK Free Trade Agreement allows 99% of Indian goods to enter the UK without any duties. This is great news for our production sector and will help our exports,” Modi explained. He emphasized the benefits for Indian youth, micro-entrepreneurs, and startups. This agreement, he believes, will help India aim for the position of the world’s third-largest economy.

Modi explained that the development of infrastructure and energy is crucial for state advancement. “Today’s inaugurated projects in Thoothukudi are proof of our commitment to improving Tamil Nadu,” he stated.

The new airport terminal is set to significantly increase its capacity, catering to 20 lakh passengers a year, up from just three lakh before. This upgrade is expected to enhance air travel in southern Tamil Nadu and further the region’s industrial growth.

Reflecting on Thoothukudi’s rich history, Modi praised its legacy of patriotism and vision, mentioning figures like VO Chidambaram Pillai and Veerapandiya Kattabomman as part of its heritage.

Additionally, today marks Kargil Vijay Diwas, and Modi took a moment to honor the sacrifices of Indian soldiers. “On this day, I bow to those who served our nation,” he stated.

Others present at the ceremony included Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, and several state ministers.

This focus on infrastructure aligns with a growing trend in India, where recent investments in transport and energy sectors are expected to contribute to greater economic expansion. For instance, a 2022 report from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation indicated that infrastructure development could lead to a potential GDP growth of 2-3% annually.

Experts in urban planning note that infrastructure not only boosts local economies but also enhances quality of life. As Thoothukudi embraces these changes, the major emphasis on logistics and connectivity could serve as a model for other cities in India.
