Government-owned oil companies are facing significant losses, estimated at about ₹30,000 crore monthly due to the price difference between selling and import costs. Sujata Sharma from the Petroleum Ministry noted that the retail prices remain unchanged, despite increasing global rates. This has sparked discussions about the possibility of future price hikes.
The ongoing crisis stems from tensions between the United States and Iran, which began with military actions in late February 2026. Iran’s subsequent actions have severely restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital pathway for global oil transport. To put this in context, India’s fuel prices are currently high. As of now, petrol is priced at ₹94.77 per litre in Delhi, while diesel sits at ₹87.67. Domestic LPG costs ₹913 for a 14.2-kg cylinder. These prices can vary significantly depending on local taxes.
Recent data shows that the Indian crude oil basket, which had an average price of $70 per barrel last year, jumped to over $113 in April 2026. This sharp rise is a result of emergency sourcing and increased shipping costs.
