New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a four-day journey to the United Kingdom and the Maldives, starting Wednesday. This trip aims to strengthen ties and finalize a key free trade agreement between India and the UK.

Modi will kick off his visit in the UK, where he’ll spend two days. He is set to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This meeting is significant as both countries are expected to sign the long-awaited free trade deal, which has been in the works for three years.

This deal may greatly benefit Indian exports, as about 99% will enjoy reduced tariffs. British businesses are also likely to see easier access to the Indian market for products like whisky and cars. According to recent reports, tariffs on many products will be reduced significantly, making trade smoother between the two nations.

After the UK, Modi will head to the Maldives to celebrate the nation’s Independence Day as the “guest of honour.” This visit marks a new chapter in India-Maldives relations, especially after the election of President Mohamed Muizzu, who has shown leanings towards China. Modi’s trip to the Maldives is crucial as it’s the first by an Indian leader since Muizzu took office in November 2023.

Experts believe this visit is vital for reinforcing India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which prioritizes relations with countries in its immediate vicinity. According to a study by the Observer Research Foundation, India and the Maldives share deep maritime and economic ties. Modi and Muizzu are expected to discuss strengthening these partnerships, particularly in terms of economic and maritime security.

The upcoming talks will cover a wide range of topics, including defence, climate, and health. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has noted that strengthening these ties will benefit both nations significantly.
