Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, has labeled a recent explosion on a railway line leading to Ukraine as “an unprecedented act of sabotage.” He promised to track down those responsible, no matter who is backing them.
The blast, which occurred on a Sunday morning, damaged the tracks and is believed to have targeted a train. Thankfully, there were no injuries, as the only passengers were a few people and staff on board when an alert train driver made an emergency stop.
After an emergency meeting in Warsaw, Poland’s special services minister hinted that the explosion might have been ordered by a foreign power. A resident mentioned hearing a loud noise the night before. “It shook the whole building,” he said, recalling his initial worry that it was a gas explosion or a malfunctioning drone. Local police investigated but found nothing alarming.
Despite several trains passing the area without incident the day after the explosion, authorities didn’t close the track in time for safety measures. Police are now gathering evidence, including security camera footage, to identify those responsible for this “shameful act.”
This incident comes as Poland confronts other suspected hybrid attacks, such as parcel bombs sent last year from Lithuania. Some of those involved are in custody, including a Russian man linked to the plots.
