On Saturday morning, tensions flared as Russia launched a major aerial attack on Ukraine, prompting Polish and allied military aircraft to scramble into action. This escalation comes just hours after NATO intervened to intercept Russian jets violating Estonia’s airspace.
Polish military officials reported, “Due to escalating Russian aviation threats, our airspace is now active with duty fighter pairs and maximum readiness for air defenses.”
According to Kyiv’s Air Force, the assault included an unprecedented launch of 579 attack drones, as well as eight ballistic and 32 cruise missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the gravity of the situation: “Every strike is not just aggression; it’s a strategy to terrorize our civilians and destroy infrastructure.”

Previously, on Friday, NATO intercepted three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets that intruded into Estonian airspace. The Estonian military classified this incident as “unprecedentedly brazen,” citing that the jets were unresponsive and posed risks to other aircraft in the vicinity.
Responding to the violation, NATO deployed Italian F-35 fighters and aircraft from Sweden and Finland. Despite the evidence, Russia denied entering Estonian airspace, claiming its activities followed international rules.
As a direct result of the escalation, Estonia has sought NATO Article 4 consultations, allowing member countries to bring security issues to the alliance’s attention. A meeting is expected next week to discuss these serious concerns.
