Poland has pointed fingers at Russian intelligence for a devastating fire that nearly leveled the Marywilska shopping center in Warsaw last year. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that they have solid evidence suggesting the fire was an act of arson ordered by Russian special services.

Tusk mentioned that some suspects are already in custody, and others are being pursued. Though Moscow hasn’t responded directly to these claims, it has previously denied any involvement in sabotage activities across Europe.

The fire, which occurred in May 2024, wiped out around 1,400 small businesses, many of which were run by the Vietnamese community in Warsaw. Following a year-long investigation, Polish authorities concluded that the fire was orchestrated by a person in Russia. A joint statement from Poland’s justice and interior ministers confirmed this, adding that they were collaborating with Lithuania on the case since some suspects also operated there.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has arrested several individuals accused of acting on behalf of Russian intelligence. Polish officials argue these actions are part of a "hybrid war" launched by Moscow, characterized by covert attacks that cause damage without being overt acts of war.

Fortunately, just three months post-disaster, the center’s owners opened a temporary venue, allowing around 400 traders to continue their operations. Additionally, another shopping center, Modlinska 6D, opened in October 2024, providing a new home for many displaced businesses.
