The Polk County Schools Child Nutrition Department is excited to announce its Summer Food Service Program. This initiative provides free and healthy meals for children who might face hunger when school is out.
Starting June 5 and running until July 31, the program will offer meal packages filled with nutritious breakfasts and lunches. Children aged 18 and younger can receive these packages every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Polk County High School. Please note, there will be no distribution on July 3.
Jennifer C. Peeler, the Director of Child Nutrition, shared, “Our goal is to support families by offering healthy meals, especially during the summer months.” Each package includes familiar food options, fresh fruits, and milk—all aimed at making mealtimes enjoyable.
This program is part of a larger national effort, managed by the Food and Nutrition Service under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and overseen in North Carolina by the Department of Public Instruction.
- When: Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. (June 5 to July 31, no distribution on July 3)
- Where: Polk County High School (curbside pickup available)
- Eligibility: All Polk County children under 18 who are not in another program providing two meals daily
- Cost: Free—no forms or income verification needed
- What’s included: Seven days of breakfasts and lunches per child
This program has been a hit in previous years, and organizers hope to serve even more meals this summer. Additionally, Manna food bank bags will be available for families at the pickup site.
Food insecurity is a significant concern, especially during the summer months when children lose access to school meals. Programs like this are essential in bridging that gap. According to a 2023 survey by the Food Research & Action Center, more than 12 million children in the U.S. experience food insecurity outside of school hours. Providing free meals helps combat this issue and supports families during challenging times.
