Pope Francis Hospitalized: Vatican Assures Public That Night Went Well Despite ‘Critical’ Condition

Pope Francis is currently resting in the hospital but is in a “critical” condition due to respiratory and kidney issues, according to the Vatican. He has been receiving care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14.

After struggling to breathe for several days, the Pope was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. Initially, he was treated for bronchitis. His latest updates reveal that he is getting high-flow oxygen therapy and has undergone blood transfusions. Fortunately, his breathing has stabilized, and he did not face any further respiratory crises over the weekend.

Doctors noted some mild kidney problems, but they are currently under control. The Pope’s blood tests showed stable levels related to his thrombocytopenia, a condition where the body has too few platelets.

On Sunday, he participated in a Holy Mass with the medical staff caring for him. However, he had to miss the traditional Angelus prayer again, prompting him to ask for prayers from Catholics worldwide.

Pope Francis has a history of lung issues, having suffered from pleurisy in his youth, which required the partial removal of a lung. This makes him more vulnerable to pneumonia, which can arise from various infections.

Throughout his 12 years as Pope, he has been hospitalized several times, including for bronchitis just a few months ago. Pope Francis is notable for being the first Latin American and first Jesuit to lead the Roman Catholic Church.
