ROME (AP) — Pope Francis is recovering from double pneumonia and had a visit from the Vatican’s secretary of state on Sunday. He skipped his usual noon blessing again to avoid a public appearance from the hospital.
In a message from the Gemelli hospital, Francis expressed gratitude to his doctors and everyone who sent prayers. He also prayed for peace, especially in Ukraine. He shared, “From here, war appears even more absurd,” and reflected on his experience of solidarity with those who are suffering.
His words highlighted a deep sense of hope during this difficult time. “I feel in my heart the ‘blessing’ that is hidden within frailty,” he wrote. “It is in these moments that we learn even more to trust in the Lord.”
Francis has now canceled his Sunday Angelus prayer for three weeks. Doctors reported he is stable, showing signs of recovery after a recent respiratory crisis. Although he faced a rough patch with coughing that raised concerns, his condition seems to be improving.
The Vatican announced that he had a quiet night, enjoyed breakfast, and was able to read the Sunday papers. These signs suggest his health is on a positive path. Doctors noted that he has been off mechanical ventilation for longer periods, and they did not detect any fever or signs of a new infection.
During a visit on Sunday, Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Pena Parra met with the pope, further indicating his stabilizing health. The Vatican spokesperson confirmed that there were no critical incidents regarding Francis’ condition and that he was able to maintain oxygen levels while only using high-flow supplemental oxygen.
Pope Francis, 88, has a history of respiratory issues. He was admitted to the hospital after a bout of bronchitis that escalated into pneumonia affecting both lungs. As he continues to recover, he is taking care of himself with proper nutrition and therapy.
His hospitalization comes during the Vatican’s Holy Year, attracting many pilgrims to Rome. Some have visited Gemelli to pray for his health. For example, Rev. Riccardo Fumagalli and a group of young people traveled from Milan to express their support. Cancer patient Antonino Cacace also made his way to Gemelli, hopeful for a chance to meet the pope.
