The Portland Trail Blazers have officially extended coach Chauncey Billups’ contract. This news emerged recently, with general manager Joe Cronin announcing the deal as Billups wrapped up his fourth season with the team.
Billups, who has a long-standing friendship with Cronin, has been focused on building a strong identity for the Blazers. Cronin praised him as a “great leader, motivator, and communicator,” emphasizing their excitement to continue working together.
Currently, the Trail Blazers are 35-46 and not in playoff contention. However, the team has shown significant improvement, boasting a record of 22-18 since January 19. Their defensive performance during this stretch ranks among the best in the league, especially in transition defense.
Billups is managing a young roster, with players like Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, and Toumani Camara showing marked growth. Amidst this youth, there are also key veterans like Anfernee Simons and Jerami Grant. This blend aims to create a competitive environment focused on hard work and defense, something Billups is very passionate about. As he put it, he wants to offer fans in Rip City a team they can celebrate each night.
Reflecting on Billups’ short coaching career, his record stands at 116-211. Interestingly, his current wins this season are the highest for the Blazers since the 2020-21 season when they last made the playoffs.
Looking at Billups’ background, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last year. As a former player, he led the Detroit Pistons to an NBA championship in 2004, earning Finals MVP honors along the way. His experience brings much-needed insight as he navigates this coaching role.
