An Army veteran on the Portland City Council is urging active and former military members to voice their concerns about President Trump’s plan to send the National Guard to Portland.
Councilor Mitch Green expressed his thoughts in a video, stating, “We are facing an illegal and unprecedented assault on our civil rights by the Trump administration.” Standing in his Army uniform, he made this appeal in Terry Schrunk Plaza, near City Hall.
Green represents District 4, which covers downtown Portland, including an ICE office known for attracting protests. Trump cited these protests as justification for the National Guard’s deployment.
He reminded current military personnel of their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Green emphasized that this oath doesn’t mean blind obedience. “You have not just the right, but the duty to disobey an unlawful order,” he said.
Green is calling on service members and veterans to wear their uniforms and join the protests against this deployment. “Engage in that sense of duty you cultivated while in service. Use your voice to speak out,” he urged.
Since taking office in January, Green has frequently challenged Trump’s policies. In a July interview, he expressed his willingness to be arrested to protect the city from federal actions. He believes it’s critical to stand against any form of authoritarianism.
Interestingly, Green is not the only council member with military experience. Councilor Eric Zimmerman, also from District 4, is a veteran of the Army and currently serves in the Oregon National Guard but chose not to comment on this matter.
Recent polling indicated that many Americans are divided on the use of federal forces in local protests. A survey by Pew Research found that 54% of respondents believe deploying military forces is an excessive measure, reflecting a growing concern about civil liberties.
