PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers have parted ways with Head Coach Phil Neville. The team is now looking for a new head coach.
Merritt Paulson, the Timbers’ owner, expressed his gratitude for Neville’s contributions. He described Neville as a positive leader who worked hard for the club and the community. “Phil has outstanding leadership qualities,” Paulson said, underscoring the bond they shared during Neville’s tenure.
Neville joined the Timbers in November 2023. Over two and a half seasons, he led the team to a record of 27 wins, 31 losses, and 24 draws. Currently, the Timbers sit in 13th place in the Western Conference with a record of 4 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws, totaling 14 points in the ongoing 2026 season.
The team is on a three-week break for the summer international window, returning to play on July 16. The interim coaching plans will align with the timeline for hiring a new head coach.
Ned Grabavoy, the general manager, acknowledged Neville’s efforts and passion, stating, “We are appreciative of Phil’s commitment.” Despite help from Neville, the team struggled to meet its performance expectations. Grabavoy mentioned that discussions had been held on ways to improve, but progress was lacking.
In his first season, Neville guided the Timbers to their playoff berth since 2021, with a record of 12 wins, 11 losses, and 11 draws. Under his leadership, Portland set a club scoring record by netting 65 goals in the 2024 season. In his second season, he led the team to another playoff appearance but faced disappointment in the postseason.
Neville shared his gratitude, thanking the organization and the fans for their support. He acknowledged the challenges of the results-driven nature of sports but emphasized the bond formed with players and the community. “To the Timbers Army — you are the reason I felt inspired,” he noted, encouraging fans to continue supporting the team.
Before joining the Timbers, Neville had over two seasons of experience as head coach for Inter Miami CF. His leadership style and commitment to the game are qualities that many in the sports community admire.
According to recent statistics, in the MLS, only about 36% of coaches remain with their teams for more than three seasons, highlighting the pressure and challenges they face. As the Timbers embark on this new chapter, fans are eager to see who will take the helm next and how they will strive to rebound in the 2026 season.
