Potential Changes Ahead: UW Health May Lose In-Network Status for Anthem Blue Cross Members During Contract Talks

MADISON, Wis. – UW Health could soon be out of the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield network. They announced that they haven’t reached a new agreement with Anthem, and their current contract will end on April 15.

If no agreement is made by that date, UW Health facilities, including hospitals and clinics, will no longer be in-network for Wisconsin patients with Anthem insurance. Currently, UW Health is negotiating with Anthem, but they feel Anthem’s latest offer is not reasonable for their staff and patients.

According to UW Health, Anthem’s proposal suggests a payment increase that falls short of inflation and allows Anthem to change payment terms without renegotiation. This is concerning for both the health system and the patients who depend on their services, which range from regular check-ups to complex procedures like organ transplants. The agreement’s outcome also impacts UnityPoint Health-Meriter.

For now, patients with Anthem insurance can still access UW Health and its affiliated services. UW Health plans to notify affected patients about the situation and any changes that may happen.

“We are dedicated to our patients, including those with Anthem insurance, during this time,” stated UW Health.

Patients are encouraged to speak to their employers about keeping UW Health in-network or contact Anthem directly using the information on their insurance cards.

WMTV 15 News has reached out for updates from Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and will share more information when it becomes available.
