Hyderabad: P.R. Sreejesh, a celebrated figure in Indian hockey, has voiced strong criticism of Hockey India after his recent removal as head coach of the junior team. The two-time Olympic medalist took to social media to share his frustrations about the lack of clarity surrounding the new “development team.”
Sreejesh pointed out that he had questions about the team’s structure, the players involved, and the planned camps and tournaments. He seemed surprised that instead of a promotion, he was offered a position he viewed as a demotion.
In a revealing post, he highlighted the number of foreign coaches involved with Hockey India, indicating a preference for outside talent over local expertise. “We have 4 teams, 6 foreign coaches, and 1 Indian coach per team,” he noted. This led him to question the path forward for Indian coaches and teams.
Hockey India clarified the situation by stating that Sreejesh was not fired; rather, his contract expired and a standard hiring process was followed. Frederic Soyez has since been appointed to lead the junior team.
This dispute reflects broader concerns in sports regarding the balance between local and foreign talent. Many athletes and fans support the idea of nurturing homegrown coaches and players, believing they understand the unique challenges and dynamics of the local game better.
