Today, a diverse group gathered at Queen’s Park to present Premier Doug Ford with an unusual recognition: an Award for Climate Betrayal. This comes shortly after Ontario’s government scrapped its climate accountability plans.
Groups like the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign, Seniors for Climate Action Now!, and Change Course voiced their concerns. The government recently amended the 2018 Cap and Trade Act, removing critical climate goals. Activists say this jeopardizes the well-being of Ontarians and future generations.
“Premier Ford has broken another promise,” said David Robertson from Seniors for Climate Action Now!. “Instead of safeguarding us from severe weather, he eliminated Ontario’s climate strategy.”
Dr. Sehjal Bhargava, President-Elect of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, emphasized the real dangers. “Extreme heat can turn homes into ovens, and floods can devastate families,” she noted. “We need clear targets to cut greenhouse gases for everyone’s safety.”
Victoria Creese from GASP (Grandmothers Act to Save the Planet) added that the government’s actions are failing children. “This decision affects the quality of life for future generations,” she stressed.
Chloe Tse from Change Course pointed out, “Restrictions on fossil fuels are necessary. Youth here deserve better than the climate chaos we’re facing.”
Lyn Adamson of the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign ended the ceremony by calling for new, ambitious climate plans to ensure a sustainable future for all Ontarians.
According to a recent survey by @EcoActionCanada, nearly 80% of Canadians support stronger climate action. This demonstrates a clear disconnect between public opinion and government actions.
As the conversation around climate change continues, it’s essential to recognize how decisions made today will impact lives tomorrow. The hope remains that a unified push for meaningful climate policies will lead to healthier communities for everyone.
