The weather in Boston is about to take a turn. Get ready for a wintry mix of ice, sleet, and rain starting Thursday night through early Friday morning.
Different areas will feel different impacts. In Worcester County, watch out for ice. Essex County is likely to see more snow, while the southeastern part of the state may face heavy rain that could lead to flooding.
Here’s what to expect:
Thursday Daytime: Expect a gloomy day with some scattered rain and sleet. It won’t be too impactful but will feel damp and cool.
Thursday Night: Rain will become steadier. Temperatures will drop, turning rain into sleet and freezing rain, especially north of the Massachusetts Turnpike.
During the night, southeastern Massachusetts will experience heavy rain. Meanwhile, areas north and west of I-95 will see a mix of sleet and freezing rain.
Ice and Travel: Untreated roads may become slippery quickly. The biggest concern for ice is in Worcester County, where ice could accumulate up to a quarter of an inch on trees and power lines.
Snow Possibilities: Early Friday morning, the ice should change to snow in some regions. Expect snow accumulation between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. in areas like Essex County and southeastern New Hampshire. You might see 3 to 6 inches of snow there. In northern Worcester County, a wet snow and sleet mix might give you 1 to 3 inches.
The weather is likely to be most challenging from 9 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday. Conditions should improve as the day goes on.
Flooding Risks: There’s a risk of localized flooding in southeastern Massachusetts due to 1-1.5 inches of rain on top of existing snow. If you can, clear gutters and storm drains to help water flow safely away from your home.
Brighter Days Ahead: After this storm, temperatures will rise into the 50s this weekend. By midweek, you might even see a high of 70 degrees. This warm weather will help melt much of the snow cover.
