Tropical Storm Gabrielle is gearing up to potentially become a hurricane soon, with forecasts indicating it may strengthen by Saturday night.
As of 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, Gabrielle was moving northwest in the Atlantic with wind speeds reaching 65 mph. It was situated about 580 miles southeast of Bermuda, according to updates from the National Hurricane Center.
David Roth, a forecaster at the National Weather Service, suggests that Gabrielle could max out with winds of up to 105 mph, classifying it as a Category 2 hurricane. While it is expected to pass east of Bermuda on Sunday night or Monday, locals may experience higher surf and dangerous sea conditions, though a direct hit isn’t anticipated. Roth noted that Bermudians could see increased winds and larger waves, particularly on Tuesday.
Moreover, Gabrielle is not expected to impact the U.S. mainland directly; however, swells could reach the East Coast, particularly areas north of North Carolina. After skirting past Bermuda, the storm is likely to curve northeast toward the Azores.
If Gabrielle does strengthen into a hurricane, it would mark the second hurricane of the Atlantic season. Interestingly, this timing is nearly a month later than usual, as the second hurricane typically forms around August 26, according to the National Hurricane Center.
