Indian Railways Fare Changes
Indian Railways has announced changes to ticket fares effective December 26, 2025. For journeys over 500 km in non-AC coaches, passengers will pay ₹10 more. Importantly, there will be no fare increase for local trains or for journeys up to 215 km in ordinary class.
The new fare structure shows an increase of 2 paise per km for Mail and Express trains in non-AC coaches and AC classes. With these changes, the Railways hope to generate around ₹600 crore in additional revenue this year.
Why the Increase?
Over the past decade, Indian Railways has expanded its network significantly, reaching remote areas of the country. However, this expansion has led to rising costs. According to the Railways, the manpower costs alone have increased to ₹1,15,000 crore, with total operational costs reaching ₹2,63,000 crore in 2024-25.
