Preparing for Challenges: How the Food Bank is Tackling Potential Shutdown Effects

As the federal government shutdown extends, the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties is sounding an alarm. While CalFresh benefits, also known as SNAP, will still be available this October, a prolonged shutdown could disrupt payments in November.

The Food Bank advises recipients to stretch their benefits as much as possible this month. Many individuals are already struggling to make ends meet, so this is no easy task.

Food Bank President Caitlin Sly highlighted a significant increase in demand for assistance due to rising costs and cuts to nutrition programs. Recent legislation has slashed $200 billion from food benefits, a record-setting reduction that puts additional pressure on local food systems.

“Historically, food assistance hasn’t faced cuts like this,” Sly stated. This heightened demand for food aid has persisted since the pandemic and will likely increase if the government shutdown continues.

Currently, programs like CalFresh won’t face immediate interruptions, but the ripple effects may soon be felt. The Food Bank relies on food from the USDA, and delays in federal support could impact its operations too. “Right now, everything is stable through October, but we’re on edge,” Sly said. “If the shutdown lasts a month or more, we could see payment delays or interruptions.”

Sly also pointed out that the timing of this shutdown is particularly tough. Many community members, including federal workers and military families, live paycheck to paycheck. “Most of us are just one missed paycheck away from hard choices between paying for food and other essentials,” she explained.

Reflecting on past shutdown experiences, Sly recalled a 35-day shutdown in late 2018 that still allowed for public benefits. However, the length of that furlough led to many more people needing food assistance. “We’re bracing for a similar increase now,” she added.

Despite the challenges, the Food Bank remains dedicated to serving the community. Sly noted that many local residents are juggling multiple jobs but still struggle due to the high cost of living in the Bay Area. The ongoing uncertainty can push first-time users to seek help.
