President Droupadi Murmu Advocates for a Clean Environment: A Moral Duty to Future Generations at NGT Conference

President Droupadi Murmu recently spoke at the National Conference on Environment, highlighting the urgent need to consider the legacy we leave for future generations. She pointed out that ensuring clean air and water for our children is not just important—it’s our moral duty.

During her speech, she encouraged everyone to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles. Murmu acknowledged that while families often focus on educational paths and careers for their children, they must also think about the state of the environment. She painted a vivid picture of the world we want our children to experience: air filled with birdsong, clear water to drink, and lush green forests to explore.

“Balancing a clean environment with modern development is a challenge we can rise to,” she said. Murmu praised the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for its important role in environmental justice, asserting that its decisions affect our health and the planet’s future. In recent years, India has made significant strides in meeting its international environmental commitments.

Justice Vikram Nath, a Supreme Court judge, addressed the alarming air and water pollution issues in India. He expressed concern that children should not have to wear masks to play outside or face health risks from pollution. “This is an urgent call for action,” he emphasized, recognizing the NGT as a pathway for resolving environmental disputes.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani echoed these sentiments, suggesting the establishment of a national commission on the environment to bridge gaps between policy, regulation, and enforcement. He noted that while India has strong environmental laws, enforcement remains a challenge. “How we implement these laws is just as crucial as having them,” he stated.

Justice Prakash Shrivastava, chairperson of the NGT, highlighted the conference’s goal of crafting actionable solutions for a sustainable future. Bringing together experts and students, he said the discussions aim to foster practical steps toward environmental preservation.

Overall, protecting our environment is not just about laws and policies; it’s about creating a better world for the upcoming generations. Engaging with environmental issues, both big and small, can lead us towards a healthier planet.
