President Garimella Unveils Key Progress and Priorities in Engaging Presentation to Regents

At the University of Arizona, President Suresh Garimella recently addressed the Arizona Board of Regents, highlighting the university’s strong commitment to student success, research, and community involvement. This focus stems from collaborative efforts involving students, faculty, and the entire U of A community to lay out the university’s strategic goals.

Garimella outlined the university’s financial health and the impact of their strategic priorities, emphasizing the potential of the U of A to serve as a "force for good." Provost Patricia Prelock, alongside her leadership team, discussed plans to enhance student learning. They aim to foster a sense of belonging among students, boost retention rates, and support academic success. Their approach is grounded in comprehensive faculty support and innovative curricula.

In research, Tomás Díaz de la Rubia introduced the "Big Idea Challenge," aimed at fostering collaboration across disciplines. This initiative recently awarded funding to six teams working on critical issues ranging from healthcare to environmental sustainability. Each team will receive $250,000 to turn their ideas into tangible solutions. Díaz de la Rubia highlighted that the university’s impact goes beyond just numbers; it translates discoveries into real-world applications that benefit the community.

Garimella reiterated the university’s role in addressing state needs, sharing a video that showcases U of A’s community engagement efforts. “As Arizona’s land-grant university, we open doors, expand knowledge, and partner with communities,” he said.

Chief Financial Officer John Arnold reported a balanced budget for 2026 while ensuring no tuition increases for in-state undergraduates. He expressed confidence in the university’s future, thanks to cohesive teamwork and strategic investments in student success.

The meeting also addressed research collaborations with Arizona State University to reduce cancer risks for firefighters exposed to hazardous materials. A new pathway for medical students was approved to tackle the primary care physician shortage in Arizona.

In addition to administrative updates, the board welcomed new provost Patricia Prelock and approved Becky Burke as the head coach of the women’s basketball team. Burke had impressive success at the University at Buffalo, leading them to a record season.
