President Droupadi Murmu is on a significant state visit to Portugal and Slovakia, her first in nearly thirty years. This trip is an important moment for India, highlighting its growing ties with Europe amidst changing global trade dynamics.
Her visit to Portugal is especially meaningful, falling on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal. The last time an Indian president visited was 27 years ago. During her stay, President Murmu will meet with key leaders, including Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. These discussions will center on enhancing cooperation in various sectors such as renewable energy, information technology, pharmaceuticals, education, tourism, and defense.
Trade between India and Portugal has surged, reaching around $1.5 billion, with a notable 50% increase over the past five years. This growing economic bond reflects Portugal’s pivotal role in strengthening India’s ties with the European Union. In fact, the European Commission President recently visited India, paving the way for potential progress on the India-EU free trade agreement.
Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, noted the importance of this engagement. He pointed out that the first summit between India and the EU was held under Portugal’s presidency in 2000, marking the beginning of a collaborative journey that continues to evolve today.
While in Portugal, President Murmu is set to connect with the Indian community, which includes around 125,000 individuals. This community has become an integral part of Portugal’s social ecosystem, with many contributing to diverse fields across cities like Lisbon and Porto.
After Portugal, President Murmu will head to Slovakia, where the connections run deep. Historical ties include the translation of Mahatma Gandhi’s works into Slovak. Additionally, Slovakia supported India during the evacuation of students from Ukraine in 2022, further strengthening their bond. During her visit, she will meet with Slovak leaders and visit a Tata Motors facility, which underscores India’s investments in the region.
Overall, this diplomatic tour is not just about strengthening trade ties; it embodies a deeper narrative of cooperation, cultural exchange, and community connection between India and key European countries.
