Travalyst has developed a carbon calculator in partnership with major travel and tech companies. This tool, however, has faced criticism for underestimating flight emissions. For instance, the UK government reports that a round-trip business class flight on this route produces around 4,575 kg of CO2, enough to melt 13.5 square meters of Arctic summer sea ice. In contrast, Travalyst’s calculator suggests a significantly lower figure of 2,600 kg.

This disparity raises questions about the messages shared at the event. Prince Harry emphasized that climate change is not just an environmental problem; it’s also a business challenge.

Despite the criticism, Travalyst aims to guide travelers toward more sustainable choices. In its five-year milestone report, the organization emphasizes important steps for reducing environmental impact. It encourages travelers to choose closer destinations, utilize trains when possible, and opt for flights with lower carbon emissions when flying is necessary.

Travalyst was launched in 2019, with partners like Google and Booking.com, and currently employs 20 people. A spokesperson noted that Prince Harry has traveled only three times for its work in six years, primarily opting for virtual meetings.

The organization advocates for awareness around travel choices. It suggests that consumers think about low-carbon transport options, like rail travel, when planning trips. If air travel is unavoidable, they recommend paying attention to carbon emissions data during the booking process.

Experts have critiqued the accuracy of the carbon calculator. Greenpeace raised concerns in 2022, accusing it of downplaying emissions by not accounting for heat-trapping condensation trails. Some analysts argue that the tool may present a too-rosy picture of airlines’ environmental impacts. Travalyst asserts that the calculator now offers improved estimates, accounting for more greenhouse gases and enabling better comparisons for flights carrying both cargo and passengers.
