Princeton University Athletics Celebrated with USTA’s Prestigious Facility of the Year Award!

Princeton University has just been awarded the prestigious title of Featured Facility of the Year by the USTA. This honor is a significant achievement in the USTA’s Outstanding Facility Awards program, celebrating exceptional tennis venues across the nation.

The recognition took place at a September 2025 awards event held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during the US Open. Among those representing Princeton were the men’s tennis head coach Billy Pate, women’s tennis head coach Elizabeth Johnson, and John Mack, the Ford Family Director of Athletics. Mack and men’s basketball coach Mitch Henderson even participated in the coin toss before a major match that evening.

Mack expressed pride in Princeton’s new tennis facility, which aims to be a top-tier venue for athletes. Opened in November 2024, the Racquet and Recreation Fieldhouse spans 180,000 square feet and features 18 tennis courts, both indoor and outdoor. It’s not just for varsity teams; it serves the entire campus and local community, offering various recreational programs.

The facility includes performance and sports medicine areas, lounges, and locker rooms. Beyond catering to Princeton’s athletes, it hosts USTA events and community clinics, promoting tennis growth across New Jersey.

According to Theodore Loehrke, USTA’s Managing Director of Section Partnerships, investments like Princeton’s can profoundly impact communities by promoting healthier lifestyles. He noted, “These facilities help grow tennis and inspire healthier people everywhere.”

The USTA assesses facilities based on several factors, including court quality, layout, and spectator amenities. Categories span from public courts to private clubs and educational institutions, with a new “Innovation” category recognizing creative approaches in tennis delivery.

As tennis continues to rise in popularity, facilities like Princeton’s play a vital role in ensuring more people engage with the sport, fostering community and wellness.
