Senator Jeff Merkley often speaks out against these costs, stating that such funds could be better utilized in healthcare, education, and housing.
Murphy, a policy analyst from Taxpayers for Common Sense, noted that using Guard members for domestic issues like crime control is not the best approach. He explained that, although the Guard can provide support, they are limited in law enforcement capabilities. He advocates for investing in local police departments instead.
Lindsay Koshgarian, from the National Priorities Project, highlights another concern: the long-term effects on military readiness. Past deployments in response to civil unrest have reportedly diverted funds meant for training and other essential military needs. Following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, $521 million was needed to reimburse the Guard.
The costs associated with deploying the National Guard are a growing concern. If the demand for domestic deployments increases, the CBO predicts expenses could climb significantly — between $18 million and $21 million for every additional 1,000 soldiers.
