Prosecutors in Arizona have announced plans to seek the death penalty against two men, Cudjoe Young and Sencere Hayes, if they are found guilty of murdering 22-year-old Mercedes Vega in 2023. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office described the crime as particularly brutal, asserting that the two men acted in an “especially heinous” manner.
The authorities allege the men killed Vega to hinder her cooperation with law enforcement. They face serious charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping. Young’s bond is set at $2.2 million, while Hayes faces a $4 million bond.
Another man, Jared Gray, has also been charged, but prosecutors have not indicated their intent to pursue the death penalty against him. Currently, Gray is not in custody as he is serving a sentence for an unrelated theft conviction in Georgia.
Vega was reported missing on April 16, 2023, after she was abducted from her apartment’s parking garage. She was later discovered in a burned and shot condition in an abandoned vehicle near Phoenix. Evidence connects Young to the car and identifies fingerprints of Gray and Hayes at the crime scene.
