Balarabe Abbas Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, has raised alarm about the serious effects of climate change. He pointed out that rising temperatures, desertification, flooding, and pollution are threatening lives and livelihoods across the country. His remarks came during the 18th National Council on Environment (NCE) meeting in Katsina State.
Lawal emphasized the need for a united response to these environmental crises, which he described as interlinked. He noted that the Federal Government is already taking action through initiatives like the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan and the Great Green Wall Programme. These plans aim to promote renewable energy and manage plastic waste more effectively.
According to recent surveys, about 70% of Nigerians feel climate change is affecting their daily lives. Experts believe that innovative financing, like public-private partnerships and green bonds, could help strengthen these efforts. Lawal specifically called out companies such as the Dangote Group and Nigeria Bottling Company to engage in sustainability projects.
He praised Katsina State for its leadership in climate governance, stating it ranked second in the 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking. Katsina’s Green Economy Roadmap focuses on renewable energy, eco-tourism, and climate-smart solutions. The state’s upcoming Green Investment Fund aims to tackle climate issues while creating jobs and economic opportunities.
Katsina’s Deputy Governor, Farouk Lawal Jobe, noted the importance of collaboration among states to tackle Nigeria’s environmental challenges effectively. The National Council on Environment serves as a vital platform for policy coordination, ensuring that environmental sustainability remains a top priority.
As discussions continue, experts stress that local initiatives, when supported by robust national policies, can make a strong impact. With environmental threats looming, there’s a pressing need for collective action and innovative solutions.
