As the election approaches, many of us are focused on the economy and national sovereignty. However, there’s a larger issue looming: our environment. If we don’t act now to combat climate change, rising temperatures could make our planet uninhabitable. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030 to keep global warming at 1.5°C. This goal requires strong leadership and urgent climate action alongside addressing economic concerns.
Local groups like Transition Cornwall+ emphasize community-driven solutions, but national candidates also play a crucial role in climate action. Here are key areas where candidates should be held accountable:
1. Climate Action: Many countries have already found innovative ways to reduce fossil fuel usage and combat climate change. If elected, what measures will you take to boost these efforts and address the impact on the environment, citizens, and the economy?
2. Sustainable Transportation: Effective national transportation systems can improve quality of life and reduce our reliance on cars. If you’re elected, how will you ensure that people of all ages have access to safe, affordable public transit options that promote walking and cycling?
3. Protecting Biodiversity: The UN Sustainable Development Goals urge countries to protect 30% of land and water areas. If elected, how will you commit to meeting or exceeding this benchmark for protected areas?
4. Reducing Waste: Governments can enforce policies to minimize waste and promote a circular economy. If you become a leader, what specific actions will you implement to cut waste and support sustainable practices?
We encourage all candidates to share their responses to these questions at transitioncornwallarea@gmail.com, and we’ll publish them as they come in. Every voice matters, so let’s stay engaged and make our priorities clear.
