PROVO, Utah — A $70 million construction project on the University Avenue Bridge is causing significant traffic delays in Provo. Since it started three months ago, one lane of this busy roadway has been closed, frustrating both drivers and local business owners.
Wyatt Woolley, communications manager for UDOT Region Three, explained that much of the work is hidden from view. Crews are busy with utility improvements, making it hard for passersby to see the progress. “A lot is happening below the surface,” he noted.
For businesses along the route, the impact is clear. Camrie Christensen, who works at Image Wear, described the situation as “a nightmare.” The traffic has turned into gridlock. With the reduced access, she feels that the city didn’t fully consider how this would affect residents and shops. Her family’s store, which has been a part of Provo for about 40 years, is seeing fewer visitors since construction began. “Foot traffic has definitely dropped,” she said.
The ongoing work includes updates to sewer, water, and other utility lines, and while construction is progressing, traffic certainly isn’t. Woolley warned that delays will persist, particularly during rush hour. “If you can, take alternate routes to avoid the construction zone,” he advised.
A survey by the local Chamber of Commerce indicated that nearly 60% of business owners near the construction are already feeling the pinch, reporting decreased sales. As Christensen reflects on the situation, her concern grows. “It’s disheartening to think this will last another couple of years,” she shared. “It makes living here harder, and it’s pushing me to think about other options.”
