One year ago, Sony launched the PlayStation 5 Pro, a console that came with a hefty price tag of $700. They promised it would improve game performance and visuals compared to the standard PS5, even offering features like DLSS-style upscaling. Exciting, right? But for many, including myself, the hype quickly faded.
Initially, the announcement stirred mixed feelings. While some gamers were thrilled, others questioned the necessity of a more powerful console. Even I was excited to jump in, especially since I own a 4K TV and enjoy smoother framerates. Games like Battlefield 6 and Death Stranding 2 shine on this machine. However, it feels like a tease when other titles I own show little or no improvement at all.
Frustratingly, the PlayStation Store doesn’t provide clear info about which games benefit from the PS5 Pro’s capabilities. Often, I find myself searching online for answers instead of getting straightforward details. After spending $750 on the console, this lack of clear guidance is disappointing.
On a positive note, my experience with the PS5 Pro has been smooth. It runs quietly and hasn’t given me any trouble—unlike my original PS5, which had a faulty USB-C port just weeks after purchase. So, at least it feels durable, but is it worth the price?
So, should you consider getting a PS5 Pro in 2025? Honestly, it’s tough to recommend. Yes, those with 4K TVs may find some value in its performance. Yet, even as someone who cares about high graphics and framerates, I often forget the PS5 Pro is there because not enough games utilize its potential.
The lack of third-party support adds to the dilemma. It’s surprising that many games still launch without any enhancements for the PS5 Pro. One would expect Sony to encourage developers to take advantage of the console’s capabilities, but it seems they aren’t doing enough in that area.
As it stands, sticking with your standard PS5 for a few more years might be the wiser choice. The next-generation PlayStation—likely the PlayStation 6—is on the horizon, and it’ll probably come with a similar price tag but offer better features.
In a world where gaming technology rapidly evolves, waiting might be the best strategy. After all, enjoying the games you love is what matters most.
