Publisher Addresses AI Outfit Controversy Surrounding Tomb Raider I-III Remastered

Last week, Aspyr launched a free upgrade for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. This update came with a new ‘Challenge Mode’ and fresh outfits. While it was free, the reaction from players wasn’t great.

Soon after the update, players noticed odd details in the new outfits, leading some to suspect they were created by AI. This theory got a boost when Giovannu Lucca, the lead artist for the earlier remakes, stated he wasn’t involved in this patch. He confirmed that “none of the original developers” had a hand in the new designs.

To address the concerns, Aspyr released a statement on X, saying, “The outfits in the update were created by our team of artists; no AI-generated assets were used.” They also mentioned they’re working on additional updates to fix bugs and texture issues reported by players.

Aspyr’s statement reads:

“We hear and appreciate your feedback regarding the recent Challenge Mode Update for Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. Our top priority is to fix the texture issues and technical bugs. There will be a series of updates addressing various technical concerns across all platforms. If you’d like to help us prioritize fixes, you can report bugs at support.aspyr.com.”

Moreover, Aspyr rolled out a Switch 2 upgrade, enhancing gameplay to 1440p at 60fps when docked and 1080p at 120fps in handheld mode. This version is available on the eShop for $29.99 or as a free upgrade for those who already own the first release.

Notably, Tomb Raider has enjoyed a rich history since its debut in 1996. The franchise has evolved from 8-bit graphics to modern complex gameplay, making it a staple in gaming culture. This latest update’s reception shows how passionate fans are about both the visual quality and integrity of the games they love.

Social media has been buzzing with mixed reactions to the update. Players seem torn between excitement for new features and frustration over perceived quality issues. Keeping fans informed and addressing their concerns is crucial for game developers, especially in an age where online feedback travels fast.
