The Punjab Vidhan Sabha recently made headlines by unanimously passing a resolution to honor Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party, with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. This resolution, introduced by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, coincided with the 92nd birth anniversary of Kanshi Ram.
Kanshi Ram was a significant figure in fighting caste discrimination and promoting equality, inspired by the teachings of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. In Cheema’s words, “He lived and died without any property, land, or bank accounts registered in his name.” Such integrity set him apart as a true champion of the underprivileged.
He began his advocacy by forming the All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) and working tirelessly to empower youth from marginalized backgrounds to enter politics. His impactful journey included serving as a Lok Sabha MP in 1991 and representing Hoshiarpur in the Rajya Sabha later on.
In a recent visit to his native villages, Cheema announced that the Punjab government had secured ₹2 crore for upgrading a local school in honor of Kanshi Ram. They’re also building a library and auditorium to perpetuate his legacy for future generations.
Despite the resolution for Kanshi Ram receiving broad support, a proposal to honor freedom fighter Bhagat Singh with the Bharat Ratna faced hurdles. The Speaker of the Assembly did not permit a similar resolution from the Congress party to be presented.
Bhagat Singh is hailed not just as a revolutionary from Punjab, but as a national hero. His sacrifice continues to resonate, and many, including the Congress leader Bajwa, have voiced that recognizing him with the Bharat Ratna is overdue. Bajwa criticized the AAP government for failing to act while often invoking Bhagat Singh’s ideals in their rhetoric.
The contrast between the responses to the resolutions for Kanshi Ram and Bhagat Singh highlights a broader conversation about recognition in India. In recent years, public opinion has strongly aligned with honoring historical figures who contributed to social justice and freedom. Many on social media express frustration at the perceived neglect of Bhagat Singh in this regard, emphasizing that honoring past heroes is vital for motivating future generations.
