Just a day after being deported from the US, a 21-year-old from Ludhiana, Punjab, shared her story. Muskan, a business management student at CU College in London, simply wanted to return to her studies.
She was part of a group of 104 people who were deported after being detained in Tijuana, Mexico, while trying to reach the US. Muskan explained, “We never meant to enter the US illegally. We had traveled to Mexico with valid documents.”
According to her, they were stopped by police at the border and taken to a detention center. “We spent ten days there. They only checked our passports and didn’t ask us any questions,” she recalled.
When asked why she went to Mexico, Muskan chose not to share details about her journey. She noted, however, that she and her friends had a tough time in detention. They were not informed of their deportation until they arrived in India. “We had no idea where we were headed until the plane landed in Amritsar,” she said, visibly shaken. “I called my parents to let them know I was back.”
Muskan’s family took on significant debt to send her abroad, borrowing about ₹15 lakh to support her education. “I hope the government will recognize our situation and help me return to the UK,” she said. Her father, who runs a small eatery, expressed his shock, saying they were unaware of the deportation until she reached home. “We are just relieved she is safe,” he added.
Muskan emphasized the importance of returning to complete her studies. “My course isn’t finished, and I worry about my future,” she said. She appealed for assistance, stating that failing to return could jeopardize her entire career.
Local MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke has reached out to the government on Muskan’s behalf, urging that she be allowed to continue her education. “She needs this opportunity to achieve her dreams and support her family in the future,” she said.
