Manfra will oversee Purdue’s new quantum degrees program aimed at preparing the next generation of quantum experts. The program will mix theoretical studies with hands-on experiences in areas like quantum computing and communications.

“I’m excited to continue working with the talented teams at Purdue,” Manfra stated. “We’ll also seek new partnerships to speed up the journey from quantum science to real-world technologies.”

Manfra is recognized worldwide for his groundbreaking research. He led a team that provided strong evidence for the existence of anyons—particles crucial for creating reliable quantum computers. With a decade of experience at Bell Laboratories and a previous role as scientific director at Microsoft Quantum, he combines academic expertise with industry insight.

In recognition of his contributions, Manfra received the American Physical Society’s 2026 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize for his work on anyons.

Purdue’s focus on quantum science is a cornerstone of the Purdue Computes initiative, aimed at advancing research in various cutting-edge technologies, including AI and semiconductors.
