Purdue University Northwest Earns Prestigious Tier 1 Purple Star Recognition in Indiana: A Leader in Supporting Military Students

Purdue University Northwest Earns Special Recognition for Veteran Support

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has received the Collegiate Purple Star designation from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. This award highlights the university’s commitment to supporting military-affiliated students throughout their academic journey, from applying to graduation.

Anthony Pilota, the veteran services coordinator at PNW, expressed pride in this recognition. He emphasized that it helps veteran students feel assured they will receive the necessary support to thrive at PNW.

PNW is among just 28 colleges in Indiana to achieve this designation, and one of only six with Tier 1 status. This status is granted based on strict criteria across eight categories, including admissions, financial aid, and student support services. PNW scored an impressive 91% on the Collegiate Purple Star Summary Report.

PNW’s Veteran Services program is dedicated to helping military-affiliated students transition smoothly into academic life. The program offers:

  • Assistance with admission and scholarship navigation
  • Free one-on-one tutoring
  • Counseling for PTSD and traumatic brain injuries
  • A range of community-building events, like the annual Veterans Ball
  • Dedicated veterans lounges for peer support on both campuses

In addition to these resources, PNW conducts Green Zone Training for faculty and staff, fostering a more inclusive environment for veteran students.

Looking ahead, Pilota aims for PNW to achieve a 100% score within the next five years, building on the already solid foundation of support.

As the trend toward supporting veteran students grows across universities, this recognition places PNW at the forefront. Recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics shows that the number of veterans attending college has increased by over 7% in recent years, highlighting the importance of universities being equipped to meet their needs.
