LINCOLN, Neb. — Purdue faced a real challenge on Tuesday night but managed to secure a hard-fought win against Nebraska, ending the game 80-77 in overtime. Oscar Cluff scored the decisive basket with just over five seconds remaining.
Purdue started strong, quickly building a 14-1 lead thanks to four three-pointers before the first media timeout. Their defense kept Nebraska at bay and helped them control the boards, with a notable 10 second-chance points in the first half. Overall, they out-rebounded Nebraska by 17, with standout performances from Kaufman-Renn and Cluff.
Coach Matt Painter emphasized the importance of their possession advantage. “We had 20 more possessions than them, and we needed all of them,” he noted.
A key moment came when Nebraska surged with an 18-2 run in the second half, cutting Purdue’s lead from 22 points down to just five. In a tense finish, Purdue found crucial support from CJ Cox and Jack Benter, who hit clutch three-pointers to maintain their lead.
However, Purdue struggled at the foul line, finishing 11 of 20. This inconsistency nearly cost them the game.
In overtime, after regaining the lead with Cluff’s final shot, a Nebraska turnover sealed Purdue’s victory. Cluff explained the moment, saying, “Once I saw Fletch get stuck, I knew what his first thought was. I was ready to catch it and go.”
Fletcher Loyer led the scoring for Purdue with 18 points, while Braden Smith contributed significantly with 13 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. Trey Kaufman-Renn recorded an impressive 19 rebounds, showcasing his dominance in the paint.
Purdue also set a new record for three-point attempts, shooting 46 times from beyond the arc. While they made only 13, Loyer’s efforts were particularly noteworthy, as he attempted 17 three-pointers — the second most in school history.
Looking ahead, Purdue’s next test is against Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, a challenging matchup after their earlier victory over the Hawkeyes in West Lafayette.
As they continue their season, Cluff emphasized the need for consistent performance. “It’s just the beginning. We have big games coming up and need to keep it rolling until April.” This statement reflects a growing urgency in college basketball as teams push for postseason success, especially given that only the best will get a shot at the title.
