In the stunning Indian Himalayas, Padam and his wife Tulsi live in a humble home surrounded by their goats. Padam is aging and increasingly frail, and they share a moment at the edge of a cliff, contemplating a leap together. But much like characters from Samuel Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot,” they hesitate and remain still.
They are not waiting for a whimsical character, but rather for their son Hariya. He left their village 28 years ago, and his absence weighs heavily on them. This theme of departure highlights how urbanization is slowly emptying their community. Padam and Tulsi represent a couple left behind, feeling the solitude as their loved ones leave.
Padam often thinks about leaving this world, giving away goats to the few people who still stay in the village. His neighbors, Laxman and Jeevan, help them as much as they can, especially with the long trips to the hospital for Tulsi’s care.
In their daily routines, Padam and Tulsi find solace in each other’s company. They bicker and laugh, showing a deep bond that reflects their long life together. “Let’s quarrel – it’s your best talent,” Padam tells Tulsi, demonstrating their affectionate teasing. Instead of fearing loneliness, they focus on supporting each other through the challenges that arise with age.
Director Vinod Kapri beautifully captures their lives with stunning cinematography. The landscape plays an almost character-like role, emphasizing the couple’s smallness against the majestic mountains. Each frame feels intimate, from their weathered faces to their silhouettes in the window during quiet conversations. The artistry creates a compelling sense of place, making us feel the weight of their situation.
As the film unfolds, the couple’s humor and routine remind us of the strength found in companionship. Even mundane conversations about their health and habits are filled with warmth. They appear genuinely at home in their surroundings, and their lives are enriched by the simple moments they share.
At the heart of the story is a powerful message about love, resilience, and the importance of companionship. Padam and Tulsi may face a lonely future, but their bond offers hope and a reminder that even the smallest connections can mean the world.
