Muscat: Qatar and Oman have joined forces to tackle environmental issues. They recently signed an executive program for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on climate change and environmental protection. This agreement was made during Oman Climate Week, which is themed “Life in a Sustainable World” and involves over 60 participating countries.

The signing ceremony featured Qatar’s Undersecretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Eng. Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Mahmoud, and Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of Oman’s Environment Authority. This new program builds on an earlier MoU between the two nations.
The executive program aims to boost cooperation on several fronts. It will include joint projects for wildlife protection, managing endangered species, and restoring natural habitats. There are also plans to set up centers for breeding wild animals and sustainably managing nature reserves. Both countries will share expertise on protecting sea turtles and tracking marine species like whale sharks and dolphins using satellite technology.
Additionally, the program will address environmental pollution. This includes developing management plans for coastal areas, improving water quality, and safeguarding coral reefs. Efforts will also focus on creating technologies to lower carbon emissions and monitor climate change’s effects on ecosystems.
To put these plans into action, Qatar and Oman will form joint working groups. They will hold training workshops and facilitate expert visits to ensure both nations work towards shared environmental goals.
During Oman Climate Week, the Undersecretary also participated in a high-level dialogue. This session brought together key decision-makers to discuss the challenges posed by climate change and explore sustainable solutions. These talks are crucial for national and international efforts to improve our environment.
