Qatar has intercepted two Iranian Su-24 fighter jets, as reported by the Qatari defense ministry on Monday. They didn’t share many details about the incident.
In recent days, tensions have escalated in the Gulf. Arab nations allied with the U.S. have faced attacks from Iranian drones and missiles following airstrikes by Israel and the U.S. Earlier, Iranian officials warned they would target all U.S. military bases in the region. In response, U.S. embassies across the area have issued security alerts, advising citizens to exercise caution.
For instance, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an attack at the port of Bahrain where a ship was struck by projectiles. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished, and the crew was evacuated safely. However, an incident in Bahrain’s Salman Industrial City resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries when missile debris fell on a ship.
Simultaneously, three armed drones were shot down over Erbil Airport in Iraq, where U.S. forces are stationed. The sources did not specify where the drones originated.
Dubai’s Jebel Ali port has resumed operations after a previous disruption due to regional tensions. Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy in Jordan advised American citizens to take cover after detecting missile activity in Jordanian airspace.
Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed they have thwarted attacks on civilian targets, including Doha International Airport. They emphasized the need to respond to such threats but stated they were not currently in talks with Iran.
In a collective statement, the U.S., Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE condemned these Iranian actions. They described them as unjustified escalations that threaten regional stability. The nations pledged to defend their territories and acknowledged effective air defense cooperation which has minimized casualties.
With all these developments, it’s clear that the Gulf states are uniting for collective defense, emphasizing regional security and stability amidst these rising tensions.
