Qatar’s Role in the Korea-Arab Food Security Forum 2022: Building a Sustainable Future Together

Qatar recently took part in the Korea-Arab Food Security Forum held in Seoul, organized by the Korea-Arab Friendship Association. Dr. Masoud Jarallah al-Marri, the Director of the Food Security Department, shared insights on Qatar’s food security strategy. Notably, Qatar achieved the first rank among Arab nations and 24th globally in the Global Food Security Index, showcasing its strong commitment to tackling food security issues.

At the forum, discussions centered on the key challenges in agriculture, such as water scarcity and extreme weather. Korean institutions highlighted advancements in protected and smart agriculture, which are promising solutions to these pressing challenges.

Additionally, Dr. al-Marri engaged with the Secretary-General of the Korean-Arab Friendship Association to explore potential cooperation between Qatar and Korea. They reviewed a memorandum of understanding from 2019 aimed at enhancing smart farming and agricultural research efforts. Meetings with representatives from Korean universities and agricultural companies further underscored the potential for leveraging advanced technologies in smart agriculture to benefit both regions.

Food security is becoming increasingly vital worldwide. A recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that climate change will profoundly impact global food production by 2050, highlighting the urgency of innovative agricultural practices.

In recent times, social media conversations around food security have gained momentum, with many advocating for sustainable practices. A poll from a leading research firm revealed that 73% of respondents are concerned about the future of food security, emphasizing the need for global cooperation.

As countries like Qatar continue to engage in discussions and partnerships, the collaborative approach may set a benchmark for tackling agricultural challenges. For more detailed information on global food security statistics and initiatives, visit the FAO website.
