Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Secures Million for Cutting-Edge Surgical Microscope Equipment at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst has made an exciting leap in surgical care with the addition of three advanced Leica surgical microscopes. These top-notch tools were funded by a generous $1 million from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, bringing the total support from his office to over $12 million for the hospital’s enhancement efforts.

During a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, hospital leaders emphasized how this new technology will positively impact patient care. The microscopes will be instrumental in various surgical specialties, making procedures in ENT, neurosurgery, and general surgery safer and more precise. Surgeons can now see fine details of arteries and other anatomical features, which can lead to better health outcomes for patients.

“Every resident deserves quality healthcare, regardless of their background,” said Borough President Richards. “These new microscopes are an investment in our community’s health and will help our dedicated healthcare workers provide top-level care.”

Dr. Helen Arteaga, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, echoed these sentiments, noting the hospital’s commitment to serving over 1.2 million Queens residents annually. “We’re focused on ensuring that all patients, regardless of insurance status, have access to state-of-the-art medical care in their neighborhood.”

Expert opinions back up the hospital’s vision. In a recent study by the American College of Surgeons, surgeons reported a significant decrease in operation time and complications when using advanced microscopy technology. This aligns with the hospital’s goal to enhance patient recovery and safety.

Dr. Barbara Dilos, Director of Anesthesiology, highlighted the immediate community benefits. “These microscopes allow surgeons to work more efficiently and accurately. This means fewer complications and quicker recoveries for our patients.”

In the neurosurgery department, Dr. Zachary Hickman described how the microscope aids in delicate brain procedures. “With this technology, we can perform surgeries with heightened safety and efficiency, ensuring our patients receive the best possible care.”

Dr. Janki Shah, Director of ENT, shared that for many complex conditions, the new microscopes provide the necessary magnification and illumination. “This advanced tool transforms how we operate, allowing us to treat more conditions effectively,” she noted.

The hospital’s staff is grateful for this advancement. Paula Clarke, Administrator for Perioperative Services, emphasized, “This new equipment directly enhances patient care, allowing us to achieve better surgical outcomes.”

With the addition of these microscopes, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst is taking a significant step toward bridging healthcare disparities in the borough. Investing in advanced technology not only improves patient care but also strengthens the community’s health system as a whole.
