Quentin Tarantino Critiques Hollywood as ‘Flavorless Sausage Factory’

Quentin Tarantino has expressed dissatisfaction with many contemporary Hollywood films. In an article for Sight & Sound magazine, he stated that he finds it “almost impossible” to watch new movies without critiquing them heavily.

Tarantino criticized modern films for their perceived flaws, calling out “implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid shit.” He remarked that current movies inspire more contempt than generosity, stating, “by comparison the movies of the last six years make the 80s seem like the 30s.”

While he noted a few films he liked, including ‘West Side Story’ (2021) and ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Chapters 1 and 2 (both 2024), he indicated that they did not provide the immersive experience he seeks. “These days I’d rather read a book,” he added.

However, Tarantino found one recent film engaging: “The Rip,” a Netflix crime drama directed by Joe Carnahan. The film features Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as law enforcement officers who uncover corruption linked to $20 million of cartel cash. It also stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler.

In his review, Tarantino described “The Rip” as a suspenseful cop thriller with a clever premise, praising Carnahan’s direction, the impressive cast, and the cinematography by Juan Miguel Azpiroz. He highlighted the screenplay by Carnahan and Michael McGrale as a standout aspect of the film.

Tarantino is currently developing a play titled “The Popinjay Cavalier,” which is planned to premiere in London’s West End in 2027. The play is described as a “swashbuckling comedy” set in 1930s Europe. He has not announced details about his anticipated 10th and final film before retirement.

“The Rip” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
