QVC Group, which oversees the home shopping names HSN and QVC, is set to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This news comes through a recent announcement to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In their filing, QVC mentioned their plan to operate as a “debtor-in-possession” while restructuring under the Bankruptcy Court’s guidance. They aim to request permission to keep regular operations running during this process, targeting to emerge within about 90 days, although there’s no guarantee of this timeline.
The company has faced challenges leading up to this point. Just last year, they laid off 900 employees while adapting to the growing trend of live shopping on platforms like TikTok. This shift comes as traditional TV viewership declines, making way for new digital shopping experiences.
“Linear TV is still a critical part of our business,” the company stated, highlighting their need to diversify and engage a broader audience. With platforms like TikTok Shop gaining traction, alongside shopping influencers on YouTube and Instagram, competition has intensified. Affordable products from markets like Asia have further fueled this trend.
To enhance their offerings, QVC also explored new content partnerships, including a deal to broadcast pickleball matches, aiming to attract viewers who enjoy shopping and sports.
This bankruptcy marks a significant moment for QVC, once a leading figure in cable television shopping. The brand’s history dates back to its purchase by billionaire John Malone for $7.9 billion in 2003, and the later acquisition of HSN in 2017. As they navigate these changes, the landscape of shopping continues to evolve.
Recent studies show a growing preference for online and live shopping, with 58% of consumers now saying they prefer shopping via social media over traditional TV. This trend emphasizes just how crucial it is for companies like QVC to adapt swiftly to the digital age.
