State Rep. Chris Rabb is set to take U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans’ seat, thanks to strong support from progressive groups like the Philadelphia Democratic Socialists and the Working Families Party. During his victory speech at the Victorian Banquet Hall in Germantown, Rabb shared his vision with emotion.
“I have been critiqued for being too radical, being too bold. They ain’t seen nothing yet. This is just the beginning,” he declared, connecting deeply with his supporters.
Rabb won about 45% of the vote, leaving his closest rival, state Sen. Sharif Street, trailing with less than 30%. Street admitted defeat after the polls closed, acknowledging that he couldn’t compete with Rabb’s grassroots momentum. He reflected on the need for greater community engagement, saying, “Let’s just be honest, there was the movement that gave birth to the victory today called ‘Reclaim,’ and they wanted to reclaim their party.”
Street also recognized Ala Stanford, who finished third, noting that she had significant PAC funding for her campaign. “We didn’t have millions of dollars in TV ads, but we had people power,” he pointed out. Stanford expressed hope for Philadelphia’s future, encouraging young people and women to keep believing in their purpose despite setbacks.
Rabb’s background is notable. He once served as an aide to Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and participated in the White House Conference on Small Business during the Clinton administration. He has spent the last decade representing Northwest Philadelphia in the Pennsylvania House, advocating for racial justice, economic equity, and public education.
His approach resonates. Voters like Rachel Mattson, who supported Rabb in West Philly, emphasized the need for resilient leadership against authoritarianism. “The Democratic Party hasn’t been strong enough against Trump’s unjust policies,” she said.
This shift mirrors a growing trend in politics where grassroots movements are challenging traditional candidates. In recent years, many voters have expressed a desire for leaders who are bold and willing to fight for progressive values. According to a recent Pew Research survey, 61% of Americans believe that political engagement has grown more intense since the 2020 elections. This indicates a significant shift in how voters are interacting with issues that matter to them.
