The Lindenwood baseball team improved its record to 5-5 by beating Illinois State, 8-5, in the series opener at Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Illinois State took an early lead by scoring one run in the first inning. In the second inning, Lindenwood’s Jake Radosevich hit a leadoff home run to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Redbirds quickly answered back, scoring two runs in the third to pull ahead 3-1.
Lindenwood wasn’t discouraged. Charlie Isom-McCall hit his first collegiate home run in the third inning, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Then, with three Lions reaching base, Radosevich capitalized on the opportunity by hitting a grand slam, putting Lindenwood in the lead at 6-3.
Illinois State fought back, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth to come within one run, 6-5. They managed to escape a tough situation in the bottom half of the inning, keeping the game close.
Reliever Easton Rakers entered the game and pitched two scoreless innings, setting the stage for the eighth inning. When Lindenwood came to bat again, they scored two more runs in a clutch two-out rally. Bryson Arnette doubled to drive in Kam Edwards, and Radosevich added another RBI, making it 8-5.
Rakers sealed the victory with a scoreless ninth inning, earning his first save of the season. Josh Newell picked up the win as Lindenwood took home the win in style.
