Rafael Devers Joins Giants: Exciting Move to First Base Begins!

The Giants introduced Rafael Devers at a press conference today, and there’s exciting news. He’ll be playing as both the designated hitter and first baseman for the team. Despite being offered a long-term role at third base when he signed his ten-year extension in 2023, Devers found himself relegated to designated hitter in Boston. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Álex Cora had downplayed the possibility of a position change, but the dynamics changed when rookie Triston Casas was injured, which could have opened up a space for Devers.

However, when asked to consider first base, Devers strongly refused, indicating he felt insulted by the suggestion to give up his glove. He suggested the team find another player instead.

Transitioning to his new role with the Giants, he’ll be learning first base while remaining active as a DH. The Giants’ top prospect, Bryce Eldridge, will continue to play first base in the minors. If Eldridge does well, he and Devers could share the field for years, creating a powerful combination.

The departure from Boston brings questions about Devers’ mindset. Did broken promises weigh on him? Or was it the communication issues that frustrated him? Regardless, he is now focused on his new chapter with the Giants. He stated, “I’m moving forward from the situation in Boston and looking forward to being a San Francisco Giant.”
